The mob boss from the first part enters a park and relays information he has about Red Claw to Batman, who then goes to inform Gordon. Red Claw and her thugs attack to steal the plague weapon as Batman arrives to stop her, but Claw threatens to release the plague and Batman is forced to allow her to escape. The next day, Bruce and Selina go out on their date as Red Claw’s men attempt to force their car off of a bridge. In the Batcave, Batman is able to figure out Selina is Catwoman once he finds Isis’ hair on his clothes. Meanwhile, Maven is attacked in her apartment but Batman rescues her and she tells him that Catwoman loves him. Catwoman returns to the Multigon site and breaks in, but is caught. Batman saves her and they are captured and tied in a bunker. Red Claw says the real plague is too dangerous to use, but she will use a fake one to get money from the city and disappear before they realize it. Once she leaves, Catwoman cuts their ropes and they escape. Cutting off Red Claw, she attacks Catomwn instead of escaping, but a mountain lion attacks her and pins her down to the ground as Catwoman disappears. At home, Catwoman doesn’t find Maven but Batman is there, who reluctantly puts her under arrest, after telling her how he feels about her. Catwoman infiltrates the Multigon site. One of Red Claw's guards is patrolling the facility when he get snagged behind a bush by Catwoman. She leaves him hogtied and gagged and proceeds to enter through the ventilation system. She then takes pictures of their weapons. Unfortunately, Red Claw's thugs catch her but Batman saves her. Batman tries to get her to safety but the duo is captured and left tied up in a bunker made by the government to hide officials. Red Claw leaves the plague virus with the two explaining that the virus is too dangerous to keep. She'll release a fake plague on Gotham and by the time it's realized to be a fake, she'll already have her ten billion dollar gold bouillon ransom. She drops a bit of acid onto the canister that slowly eats through the seal and evacuates the premises. Catwoman however, manages to cut the ropes with her claws and the pair manages to get free. Batman tells Catwoman to escape but he has to remain to destroy the plague. He uses a hose to spray gas from a tanker truck and tosses a grenade to set off the gas trail, thereby starting a conflagration that sets off the ammunition and destroys the facility including the newly released virus. Then, to escape, he drives the tanker truck through the garage door and crashes it into Red Claw's tandem rotor heavy-lift helicopter. Red Claw's stranded men including Multigon chairman Stern are all then illuminated by searchlights from hovering Gotham Police Department helicopters and arrested. Rather than making her escape in a small helicopter, an enraged Red Claw attacks Catwoman. She proves to be too much for Catwoman but before she can kill her, a mountain lion attacks and pins her down. Catwoman then disappears into the shadows. Returning home, Catwoman finds that Maven is gone but Batman there. As Batman finally admits his feelings for Catwoman, he reluctantly places her under arrest.
It’d be apt to start with the main negative of this two-parter, since I decided to save it for here and, well, the fact I even had a separate article for this episode is also kind of the problem. The plotline here, as I touched on yesterday, is really uninteresting, boring and uninspired. It would be if it were one episode but, for some reason, it was split into two. Why is this a two-parter?! Not to mention the fact that Red Claw herself isn’t an interesting character either. Is she supposed to be a communist? There is a split second of back and forth between her and Batman where there is some pointing out of sexism, as Claw asks if Batman has a problem with the villain being a woman, after he expresses surprise. Which is then dropped. But I have no clue where that came from or why it was mentioned, besides giving Batman a pretty decent comeback. Dragging out the episode into two parts ends up making it overlong with a villain plan that doesn’t really make any sense, where a very obvious great episode is buried beneath a bland one. Considering how well they wrote Batman and Catwoman in the first part, I wish this was a simple (I’m so sorry….) cat and mouse game between the two. It could have easily been a fun classic, and dragging out the story and deciding to introduce the villain and real behind-the-scenes on-goings here, we don’t get as much of the banter and time between our two mains as we did in the first half.
There are a few good lines in the episode, including a great exchange between Batman and an ‘informer’ who meets him in a park to let him know about any underground things going on he may have heard about, along with the always awesome Bat-Glider appearing and a neat moment where Bruce uses the Batman voice while on the phone in his car. I’ve mentioned Bruce using the voice out of costume before, but it’s always worth mentioning because it never fails to make me giddy and smile.
The Cat and the Claw is not awful, it just simply ends up being there. I do recommend watching the first half of this two-parter, though, just because the scenes between Batman and Catwoman are legitimately that enjoyable, but there isn’t much else to take away from here.
